Wednesday, June 19 – Day 1
– Joanna flies from Houston to Amsterdam

Thursday, June 20 – Day 2
– Joanna flies from Amsterdam to Marseille
– Mark flies from Skikda to Annaba to Marseille
– Both fly from Marseille to London to Reykjavik, Iceland!

Travel days aren’t very interesting to report about, but this is good because it means that everything went smoothly.  I had quite the range of flights, and I felt like I was traveling for 3 days, though I guess it was only 2 days.

We arrived late on Thursday night….around 11:30pm in Reykjavik and we could see the sun was still out, though the red ball of fire in the sky was close to the horizon line.  We actually got to watch the sun set and dip below the horizon as we drove our rental car from the airport to Reykjavik, central where our apartment was located.  It is almost an hour drive, but all in plenty of light, as though the sun went down, the light was still bright enough to see.  It was about the amount of light you’d experience just after the sun dips below the horizon, only it didn’t even get to pure twilight, or the “blue hour” as I call it.

Luckily, our apartment was easy to find and the key was left in a lock box outside the door for us to enter.  I booked everything 6 weeks, ago, so I was surprised to see how big the apartment was.  We had a decent sized bathroom, a hallway leading to the kitchen, a separate living room, and then a separate bedroom.  Also, as it turned out we were in the center of town and walking distance from everything we needed.  It doesn’t take much time to walk across the center of Reykjavik.

Very happy with our accomodations, we went to sleep finally sometime after 1am and the light was still streaming in through the windows.  Sunrise is around 2am or something, so all night long I kept waking up and checking my watch sure it was late in the day already.  But it was only 3am and 4am and 6am.  This daylight all-night thing is very strange and definitely our first introduction to iceland.

No photos today.  Also, I’m using a new blog format for this trip, and instead of one post per day, I’ll do about one post per region or so.  This will cut down on the amount of time that I sit and type (you’d be surprised how much time it takes!) and also it will help cut down on the amount of reading you have to do.  Hopefully this will help with the interest level as well.  =)

Until tomorrow……

  1. As long as it doesn’t cut down on the number of pictures! Glad it was an uneventful travel day.

  2. Know you’ll have a wonderful trip. Can’t wait till you do the Blue Lagoon. We LOVED it!!! You have to get in it to experience it. We’ve never done anything like it. It is a travel highlight that we still talk about.
