March 9, 2012 (Day 3)
What a wonderful and lazy day for our first real vacation day. We didn’t do much at all, but laze around. I guess we both needed our sleep, too, because we just kept sleeping away the whole morning. I think I’ve now recovered from all my jetlag at least and Mark has recovered from the lack of sleep he gets at work. We have a great view from our room, and watched the clouds on the horizon over the ocean.
This evening we finally got out and around the town of Taormina. We are in the shoulder of tourist season so there aren’t many tourists around. We walked up to the main pedestrian street and wandered around the shops and Ristorante’s. The weather is chilly at night, cold enough by 8pm for both a fleece and a windbreaker. Taormina is built into the side of a hill, so there were lots of places to stop and look out over the coast and the ocean. We saw the lights twinkling from other towns down the coast and even took a few photos. I can see how this main pedestrian drag would be bustling with tourist in the summer, but tonight we only saw locals. We picked a spot for dinner and had a wonderful meal. We started with gnocchi and spinach, then Mark had a beautiful fish filet and Joanna had a sliced steak. We ended our evening with gelato and a nutella crepe. Tonight we can hear high winds outside and we are happy to be inside our hotel room watching an episode of Torchwood. Here are a couple night photos from the town square.
